It all started with the Bees!
Hi, I’m Marcela, the heart and hands behind Flor Natura! My journey into gardening and growing flowers began in the most unexpected way—through bees.
Believe it or not, I used to be terrified of them! As a child, I’d run away screaming at the sight of any buzzing insect. I lost count of how many times I got stung, and my mom’s remedy? Onion—yes, rubbing a slice of onion on the sting! (It worked… kind of.)
But everything changed when I took a beekeeping course in university. I was instantly captivated, despite my fears. I still remember standing in a bee suit on a field trip, hearing my professor say:
“If you’re afraid, just hold your breath. Bees can smell fear.”
Fast forward to today—I now keep my own beehives right in my backyard in Calgary! I started with a mentorship program that helped me set up my first hive, and since then, I’ve been on a mission to create a bee-friendly, flower-filled haven.
Why Flowers?
Why Native Flowers?
At first, I just wanted to plant flowers to help my bees, but I quickly fell in love with gardening. I focused on native flowers, knowing they play a crucial role in supporting local pollinators. But soon, I couldn’t resist adding a mix of both native and resilient non-native blooms that could survive Calgary’s tough Zone 3-4 climate.
With each season, my passion grew—along with my garden. I even dug up the front lawn to make room for more flowers! Now, Flor Natura is all about sharing this journey, inspiring others to grow sustainable gardens, and creating spaces where pollinators and people can thrive together.
🌸 This is just the beginning! Last season was a trial run, and this year, I’m growing even more. Join me as I continue to cultivate beauty, sustainability, and a love for nature—one flower at a time.
Let’s bloom together! 🌿🐝
How We Enrich Our Soil for Vibrant Cut Flowers
In our garden, healthy soil is the foundation of every thriving bloom. We nurture the soil food web—a natural ecosystem of microbes, fungi, and earthworms—by composting organic matter like kitchen scraps, garden clippings, and autumn leaves. This regenerative practice replenishes nutrients, improves soil structure, and enhances water retention, ensuring strong, resilient flowers.
We use vermicompost and natural amendments to feed the microbiology in the soil—the true caretakers that nourish our plants. By avoiding synthetic chemicals, everything in our yard remains safe for the environment, water sources, and wildlife.
We care deeply about what goes into our soil, striving to recycle nutrients as efficiently as possible so nothing goes to waste. Our commitment to organic, regenerative practices means every bloom is not only beautiful but also grown in harmony with nature.
